Welcome to East Middle School

East Community Members,

Welcome to the end of summer.  School is just around the corner!  I’m sure that this brings up many mixed emotions.  Recently, at my granddaughters 3rd birthday party, I heard her “twenty- something” uncle say that he always loved summer school.  I asked him why, and he said, “I always felt like I was missing out when I wasn’t there. I was surprised and pleased by this, and could also relate.  I love learning and I am always seeking an opportunity to do so. Now, on the other hand, I have a lot of friends who would love a never-ending summer!  I can also relate!

For most people, it’s something more in the middle: We feel happy that the common nature of school is just around the corner, and sad that the freestyle fun of summer is coming to an end.  I can empathize with all of this. Wherever you may be with all of this, I can tell you that this year I feel stoked that school is just around the corner! I love building deep relationships with new people, I’m stoked to be the new principal at East Middle School, and I’m ready to get the show on the road!

I hope your summer has included spending time with your children whenever you can.  I’m learning to never underestimate the short blips of one-to-one time that I have with my family members.  Sometimes it’s those five minute conversations about our days that makes all the difference in our lives. Taking five minutes to listen and check in is often all we need to feel more confident in our lives.  These quick moments confirm our family values, bonds and support for each other, especially when the going gets tough. Whatever you’ve been able to squeeze in this summer, I hope you’ve had some time to play and laugh with your family

My summer started with a week long wilderness rafting trip with students!  It was an amazing trip down 86 miles of the Green River, running rapids, hiking side canyons, and playing in the sand and mud!  For me, this was an intentional disconnect from the world that I normally live in, and was exactly what I needed to refresh myself and regroup my thinking for the upcoming 2018-19 school year.  I feel excited to have a great experience and look forward to ending the school year taking students on a “wilderness trip” of some nature. East Middle School has a long history of creating deep experiences like this for its students and I feel excited to see what we can cook up for this year!

Timothy Fifer Summer

After a week in the wilderness, a Burger King milkshake never tasted so good!

As we enter the dregs of summer, here’s some reminders:

Start or Keep Reading:  It’s always a positive thing to do, and even ten minutes a day will keep you informed, intrigued and invested in your growth as a human being.

Start or Keep Playing:  Smiling and laughter will help to keep you healthy and happy and others around you will feel the same.  Bonus!

Keep Loving.  The value of families and friends can never be overestimated and the exchange of your love will bless our lives in ways that are unimaginable.

Heads Up! Keep your eyes out for the 2018-19 school year wave of information that will be coming your way soon!  Check our school and district websites, Schoology, and Synergy often, and don’t hesitate to call our front office with any questions or needs you have.  Our school is still under construction, so it’s best to call first before visiting.  We hope that all major construction is complete by August 8th.

Sincerely Your Principal,
Timothy Fifer
